Why does headlight condition matter?

Good lights do not turn winter into summer, but they help you see and be seen when the weather is doing its best to disagree.

Liikenneturva reminds drivers that they are responsible for the condition and correct use of their vehicle lights. Lights should be checked periodically, and both front and rear lights should be kept clean.

A cloudy or oxidised plastic lens can scatter some light in the wrong direction. Restoration can improve outer-lens clarity, but it cannot repair a weak bulb, damaged reflector, moisture inside the unit or an electrical fault.

When can restoration help?

  • The outer surface is cloudy, yellowed or oxidised.
  • The surface has light scratches or a worn protective coating.
  • The light unit is otherwise intact and the damage is not internal.

When is another repair needed?

  • A cracked or broken light unit.
  • Internal moisture, dirt or coating damage.
  • A faulty bulb, LED unit, reflector or electrical system.
